Delhi Metro `Smart Card Week` Attracts 34% Additional Card Users At Top 20 Stations, Will Intensify Efforts To Encourage Smart Card Users At Stations Where Token Users Are More
The Delhi Metro which observed
09th to 15th May 2011 as “Smart Card Week” to promote and popularize extensive use of Contactless Smart Card (CSC) for its frequent travelers has made an impressive mark by registering
34% increase in passengers opting for it at twenty Metro stations
(List of 20 stations attached) where special counters were set up during the week.
On an average, around
27,000 new Smart Cards are sold at these twenty Metro stations every week. However, DMRC registered a sale of
36, 426 Smart Cards during Smart Card Week at these stations which is an increase of
9,426 from their weekly average.
Amongst the stations where maximum Smart Cards were sold during the week are: New Delhi: 4,217 followed by Anand Vihar at 3,834, Chandni Chowk at 3,801 and Rajiv Chowk at 3,041.
DMRC operated Special CSC Counters at twenty Metro stations with the highest number of footfall to encourage commuters to use Smart Card.
Apart from these twenty Metro stations; other stations of DMRC network also witnessed an increase of 21% in sale of Smart Cards. The average sale of Smart Cards is around 10,000 daily whereas, during the Smart Card Week it stood at over 12,100 daily.
After the success of Smart Card Week, DMRC intends to intensify its efforts to promote Smart Card culture at all such Metro stations where token users are more, namely Chandni Chowk, New Delhi, Rajiv Chowk, Dilshad Garden, Uttam Nagar East, Anand Vihar etc. where 20,000 – 30,000 tokens are purchased by passengers every day . This will help passengers to save time from daily purchase of token, standing in Queues to purchase tokens, to avail 10% discount on every journey, for freedom of choice of originating and destination station, freedom from keeping change every time etc.
Presently, over 60% of Metro passengers (over nine lakh) are using Smart Cards on a regular basis. However, DMRC intends to increase this figure substantially to a level similar to that of the other Metro systems like Singapore and Hong Kong where almost 100% of Metro users are relying on Smart Cards for their smooth and comfortable daily journey.
