The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has won the award for Best Clean Development Project at Urban Mobility Conference, 2011 held in New Delhi yesterday.

The prestigious award was presented by the Union Minister of Urban Development, Sh. Kamal Nath during the Conference organized by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, from December 3^rd to 5^th, 2011. DMRC’s Director (Works), Sh. Mangu Singh received the award on the organization’s behalf.

The Best CDM Award was given to DMRC for its Modal Shift Project under which category, it has become the first Metro Rail and Rail based system in the world to be certified by the United Nations (UN), which will get carbon Credits for reducing Green House Gas Emissions as it has helped to reduce pollution levels in the city by 6.3 lakh tons every year thus helping in reducing global warming.

Today, about 18 lakh people travel by the Metro, which is completely non-polluting and environment friendly. In the absence of the Metro, all these commuters would have traveled by cars, buses, two/three wheelers etc which would have resulted in emission of green house gases.

This is the second CDM project from DMRC to be registered with the UN body in the last three years. DMRC’s first CDM project on regenerative braking had also achieved many international firsts apart from earning valuable foreign exchange for the country. In previous years, DMRC has received similar award from Government of India for its first CDM project and also an award for Best Environment Friendly Project by the Prime Minister.
