Delhi Metro’s new trains getting ready for operations at its state of the art depot in Mukundpur

Statement by Dr. Mangu Singh, MD, DMRC

“The construction work of Phase 3 is progressing satisfactorily and we should be able to complete the civil construction work and commence signaling trials on most of the stretches within this year. This new phase will havenew trains and signaling technology called Communication Based Train Control (CBTC).

The construction work of Phase 3 has been more challenging than the first two phases because this time, bulk of the construction is taking place within the city while in the last phase, the corridors were primarly moving out of the city to the NCR areas. The quantum of underground construction (55 kms) is also more than the underground work carried out in the last two phases. In terms of length also, the volume of work in Phase 3 is almost equal to the combined construction length of the first two phases.”

Points made by Dr. Mangu Singh at the press interaction today

·         The construction work of Phase 3 is progressing satisfactorily. Out of the 56 kilometre long Majlis Park – Shiv Vihar section, construction work of 54 kilometres have been completed. Land has not been made available to DMRC at some pockets in Mayapuri, Naraina and Trilokpuri.

·         Similarly on the 36 kilometre long Janakpuri West – Botanical Garden section, construction work of less than two kilometres are still left.

·         On the ITO – Kashmere Gate section, trial runs will be started in July, 2016. Despite many hurdles, the tunneling work on this stretch has been completed.

·         Tentative dates for beginning of signaling trials on Phase 3 sections

·         The new trains being procured for Phase 3 will be equipped to be run on the ‘Unattended Train Operation (UTO)’ mode. However, initially, the trains will be operated by Train Operators. For unattended operation, stringent trials will be held. Internationally, such trials generally take about one to one and a half years. Many new Metro systems world over are adopting this new technology.
