Disaster Management Mock Drills Conducted at Metro Stations


To assess the preparedness of various agencies in responding to an emergency situation during disasters like an earthquake in Delhi, mock drills were conducted simultaneously at six Metro stations i.e. AIIMS, Inderlok, Karkardooma, Tilak Nagar, Khan Market and Dwarka Sector 10 at 11:30 AM. today.

Between 11:30 AM and 11:51 AM, all metro train operations remained suspended and entry into these six stations was closed as a part of the standard emergency procedure. Announcements were made in the metro trains and stations during this period urging commuters to remain calm. The entire exercise took about 21 to 25 minutes. Thereafter, normalcy was restored.

The aim of this drill was to check the preparedness of the DMRC staff and coordination between the Delhi Metro`s staff, the Police, Medical staff and the fire brigade in such a disaster scenario.

The mock drills were conducted as part of a joint Mega Mock Drill programme conducted by the National Disaster management Authority and the Delhi Disaster management Authority in Delhi to assess the preparedness during disaster like earthquake etc.

Mock drills are regularly conducted at Metro premises to check preparedness to tackle different situations. A number of mock drills are conducted by the Delhi Metro on a periodic basis in which scenarios such as terrorist attacks, evacuation from trains and stations, derailment and fire are simulated.
