Delhi Metro Celebrates 17th Foundation Day

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) celebrated its 17th foundation day today with annual awards being presented to 36 deserving employees for their outstanding contribution to the Metro service during the preceding year.

Union Minister for Urban Development, Sh. Kamal Nath, attended the function as the Chief Guest and gave away the awards to the employees in the presence of DMRC’s Managing Director, Dr. E. Sreedharan.

Among the employees, Sh. Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, was selected as the ‘Metro Man’ of the year 2010-2011. The Anand Vihar ISBT Metro Station was adjudged the ‘Best Metro Station’ and awarded the ‘Best Station Rolling Shield’ award.

The last one year was indeed one of the most eventful in Delhi Metro’s history. During the year, DMRC added a record 74 kilometres to its network, including the 22.9 kilometre long Airport Express Link, which was opened in February earlier this year.

Delhi Metro also continued to introduce revolutionary new technologies in its services to provide better facilities to the commuters. Since December last year, it has introduced more than 30 six coach trains on its busy corridors. By the end of this year, there will be 99 six coach trains operational in the Metro. This step has gone a long way in solving the problem of overcrowding in the Metro system. With a fleet of over 200 trains, DMRC is today catering to about 1.5 million commuters on every working day.

The construction work of Phase-III Metro expansion is expected to start soon. The third phase of Delhi Metro construction will add another 120 kilometers of Metro network to its existing operational network. About 103 kilometres spanning over four more corridors are expected to be constructed in Delhi apart from 14 kilometers connecting Faridabad in Haryana and an approximately 3.5 kilometers connecting Botanical Garden Metro Station in NOIDA to Kalindi Kunj.

DMRC’s Foundation Day was also celebrated simultaneously at Shastri Park and Najafgarh depots where Director (Operations) Sh. Raj Kumar and Director (Rolling Stock) Sh. H. S. Anand were the Chief Guests of Honour respectively. In the programme, cash awards to Metro employees for their outstanding performance in their respective areas of work during the year 2010-11 were given.
